Smart Devices Show Potential to Help in Real-Time Field Reporting

Austin, TX, March 29, 2012 — Fiatech has announced the release of a new project report entitled "Real-Time Field Reporting for Smart Devices." The report, representing the first phase of a two-phase project, is available here.

Launched in 2010 by Fiatech and its UK partner COMIT (Construction Opportunities for Mobile IT), the study examines the feasibility and the potential benefits of using mobile devices for communicating information in real-time at a construction job site. Handheld mobile devices were tested and analyzed to assess their usefulness in a real-world construction environment.

Several advances in both hardware and software for real-time field reporting have recently emerged. Todd Sutton, business unit manager for Zachry Construction, was one of the technical leaders for Fiatech on the project. "Craft foremen need access to data in the field, and in our industry, this is often difficult," he said. "This project by Fiatech is important because it's proving that handheld computers — iPads, Androids, and smart phones for example — show great promise in getting accurate and reliable information to foremen at the site," Sutton added.

Phase II of the smart devices research will incorporate the recent advances in the smart devices technology. Many of the devices are being provided in the study at no charge by Fiatech members and sponsors. The second phase also will place more emphasis on the business process improvements made by the use of smart devices in conjunction with software.
