Game Changer Enables Automated Code Checking For BIM

Austin, TX, March 21, 2012 — The Fiatech Regulatory Streamlining Committee has completed the first phase of its AutoCodes Project Proof-of-Concept (POC) effort, which demonstrates the ability to apply automated code checking technology to Building Information Models (BIM). This project was launched in response to the fundamental need for greater consistency, efficiency and speed within the building code review and approval process.

Owners, architects, contractors and building regulatory personnel recognize that regulatory code compliance is a challenging, costly and time consuming requirement in the design and construction process. The introduction and adoption of BIM in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry has accelerated both the ability and the necessity to transform the building regulatory process to keep pace with economic demands. In short, the development and construction plan review process is a persistent bottleneck, severely impacting business development. This fact has been acknowledged at the highest levels of government as a cause for concern regarding the economic recovery in the U.S. and the ability to compete in the global marketplace.

In January 2012, the AutoCodes Project Team completed Phase I, an initial POC to demonstrate the use of automated code check technology. The project team focused on accessibility and egress provisions of the International Code Council (ICC) International Building Code (2009, chapters 10-11). The project team collaborated with the ICC, Fiatech members and 14 Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) for code compliance.

The AutoCodes Project: Phase I, Proof-of-Concept Final Report is available for download here. The team also created a video, produced by Target, that outlines the issues and challenges faced by not having automated code checking and illustrates the benefits that can be obtained.

The final report summarizes all Phase I activities, including assumptions made, methodologies followed and project team findings. Among those are: 

  • Review inconsistency is the norm, not the exception. 
  • Model creation best practices development is a critical consideration.
  • Education and information, on a global scale, is essential.
  • As an AEC methodology, BIM needs to be inclusive—AHJs must be part of the BIM ecosystem.

A panel discussion on the AutoCodes Project will be held on Tuesday, April 3, at the Fiatech Technology Conference & Showcase at Doral in Miami, Florida.
